Tours offer an insight into the everyday operations of our treatment plants and green infrastructure sites. Tours are offered to school groups, youth groups, and community groups by request. KC Water offers educational tours of our water treatment plant to groups of adults and students 12 or older. Students must be supervised by chaperones at a ratio of eight students to one adult. Treatment plant tours are conducted by appointment, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday and require at least three weeks’ advance notice. Anyone over the age of 18 wishing to tour a treatment facility will be required to complete a Visitor/Tour Release Request Form. Released personal information will be used to obtain a background check and required security clearance prior to the visit.
Note: This is a tour of a working, indoor/outdoor, industrial facility. Attendees must wear suitable footwear for uneven terrain and dress for the weather. Attendees will be required to maneuver around trip hazards and up and down stairways and may be exposed to loud noises.

KC Water offers educational tours of our Swope Campus Sustainable Stormwater Solutions project on the parking lot of our administration building. This tour is open to groups of all ages but requires a minimum of two weeks’ notice. The tour is best combined with a presentation on green infrastructure and/or stormwater pollution. Attendees will explore and see how water moves through six types of permeable pavement, rain gardens, Bioretention cells, and a bioswale. The tour also includes information on the other sustainable features of the site, including LED “dark sky” compliant lighting, electric vehicle charging stations, heat island reducing vegetation, green parking, and walking trail. This site is great for groups to learn about Green Infrastructure and stormwater management in Kansas City. It is also great for outdoor learning experiences for classrooms aged 3rd grade and up to connect real-world learning in environmental education.
