May 1-7, 2016, Declared Drinking Water Week in Kansas City

(Kansas City, Mo.) – Today the City Council of the City of Kansas City, Missouri declared May 1-7, 2016, as Drinking Water Week in Kansas City.

“Mr. Mayor and Members of the City Council, on behalf of KC Water Services’ 850-plus employees, thank you for taking the time to recognize not only Kansas City’s great-tasting and high-quality tap water, but also the men and women of KC Water Services who work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to deliver clean drinking water right to the taps of almost a half million Kansas City residents,” said KC Water Director Terry Leeds.

Director Leeds was joined at City Hall by staff from the Water Treatment Plant, Water Pipeline Division, and the Water Laboratory when the following resolution was adopted:

Declaring May 1-7, 2016, as Drinking Water Week in Kansas City.

WHEREAS, water is life’s most precious resource and a basic and essential requirement for life; and

WHEREAS, the health and quality of life of the community depends upon a reliable supply of high-quality drinking water; and

WHEREAS, only tap water delivers public health protection, fire protection, support for the local economy and the quality of life we enjoy; and

WHEREAS, Kansas City enjoys the benefit of a bountiful water supply and the highest quality drinking water; and

WHEREAS, KC Water proudly serves more than 460,000 Kansas City residents and 32 wholesale customers in the greater Kansas City area; and

WHEREAS, we are all stewards of Kansas City’s water infrastructure upon which today’s residents and future generations depend; and

WHEREAS, to ensure public health, each month KC Water tests more than 500 water samples that are collected from throughout Kansas City; and

WHEREAS, tap water is the affordable, safe, eco-friendly and local choice, and for one penny, KC Water provides to its customers the equivalent of one dozen, half-liter bottles of water; and

WHEREAS, we are asking each resident to join and enhance our efforts by protecting our source waters from pollution, using our precious resources effectively, and becoming informed about and involved in decisions that affect the quality and quantity of drinking water; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare May 1-7, 2016, as Drinking Water Week in Kansas City; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to KC Water with the recognition of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for the dedication and service of the KC Water employees.
