KC Water has reopened all lanes of Southwest Trafficway following the successful repair of a sinkhole that prompted emergency roadway closures and extensive infrastructure repairs.
Work began after KC Water was notified of a street cave-in along Southwest Trafficway shortly after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. Crews immediately responded to assess the situation, protect public safety, and determine the cause of the roadway failure.
Through its investigation, the Department determined the sinkhole was caused by the failure of a sewer line installed in 1892, when Southwest Trafficway was known as Summit Street. During repair operations, crews also identified a 30-inch transmission main installed in 1932, requiring additional coordination and specialized work to safely complete repairs.
Crews worked around the clock to stabilize the area, repair the damaged infrastructure, and restore the roadway. Thanks to their efforts, road restoration was completed approximately 15 hours ahead of schedule, allowing Southwest Trafficway to reopen sooner than anticipated.
