Brookside Charter Students Build 3D Model Showcasing KC Water’s Largest Planned Green Infrastructure Investment

Students to Unveil Model at Public Project Update Meeting on July 30

Incoming seventh and eighth grade students at Brookside Charter School are bringing a major Kansas City infrastructure project to life through a unique partnership with KC Water.

This summer, students have been working alongside KC Water representatives, city staff and project team members to design and build a three-dimensional model illustrating planned improvements at Daniel Morgan Boone Park, located directly across the street from the school. The park is located within the Town Fork Creek Watershed and is the site of KC Water’s largest green infrastructure investment planned for the next decade.

The project will transform the park into a key stormwater management asset by incorporating extensive green infrastructure features and native plantings designed to absorb, capture, treat and infiltrate stormwater runoff before it enters local waterways.

The student-created model is expected to play an important role in future community engagement efforts, helping residents visualize the planned improvements during public meetings and neighborhood presentations.

Beyond constructing the model, students have participated in a series of hands-on learning sessions with engineers, landscape architects, planners and other professionals involved in the project. The experience has provided insight into careers in engineering, landscape architecture, green infrastructure and community design while giving students an opportunity to contribute directly to a major public works initiative.

Students will present the completed model during an upcoming project update meeting, where they will discuss the design and construction process and share what they learned through the collaboration.
