Employees Recognized for Improving Service for Kansas Citians 

The Missouri Water Environment Association (MWEA) presented KC Water with several awards for their performance in water services. MWEA is a national organization, in conjunction with the American Water Works Association (AWWA). It represents over 800 water quality professionals and is consistently improving to benefit Missouri’s environment.  

“Our teams work 24/7 to produce quality drinking water and produce treated water that enables recreational use and protects public health. The recognition of these individuals highlights a few of the many who serve Kansas City every day,” said KC Water Director, Wes Minder. 

The Crystal Crucible Award to the Lab Division is awarded to Aurora Shields, WSD – Lab Division Manager and represents accomplishments by her and team at the Water Services Department Laboratory. The Crystal Crucible program recognizes and honors individuals for their outstanding contributions that promote increased professionalism in the wastewater laboratory field.  

The Golden Manhole Award was presented to Brian Lyles, Utility Superintendent and Manager of Wastewater Collection Repair Division. This award was presented in recognition of his exemplary role in the operation, management, and education of sanitary sewer systems. 

The Small Facility Operator of the Year Award was presented to Marvin Fox, Chief Plant Operator, Wastewater Treatment Division. This award was presented in recognition of outstanding service to the wastewater treatment profession. 

The Large Facility Biosolids Management Award was presented to Jason Ryun, Maintenance Supervisor and accepted by LeKeta Blount-Harris, Chief Plant Operator, and his team at the Birmingham Land Application Site (commonly referred to as the Farm) in managing all aspects of the biosolids land application program.

The AWWA Silver Water Drop Award was presented to Todd Hawes, Engineering Section Manager. Hawes was recognized for 25 years of dedicated membership and service to the profession. Hawes is the manager of Field Engineering focusing on water distribution issues and system operations.  

The awards were given at the 2023 Missouri Section AWWA & MWEA Joint Annual Meeting in Osage Beach, MO. The City is proud of their achievements and dedication to the citizens of Kansas City.
