Winter is here and as the leaves change color and fall to the ground and the snow arrives, you can help monitor stormwater infrastructure for the winter season. Winter conditions make performing stormwater maintenance more difficult for a utility, but YOU can help!
Here’s how: keep an eye on the storm drains near your home or workplace and report any issues to the City!
What Are Stormwater Inlets?
Stormwater Inlets take many different shapes. All inlets work to drain stormwater runoff and protect residents from flooding, and in the winter months, ice accumulation. Below are photo examples of what stormwater inlets can look like around town.
Why monitor Stormwater Inlets?
Blocked or obstructed inlets can cause water to back up onto the street, and as it gets colder, lead to icy conditions around the inlets.
What to do:
· Observe: While walking in your neighborhood or place of business, check the Inlets you see. Look for blockages from leaves, limbs, trash or other debris. Some leaves are okay, but excessive amounts need to be cleared out, as they can obstruct water flow.
· Report: Report any obstructions or issues to the city, either by calling 311 OR (816) 513-1313 and asking to report a stormwater issue, or using the myKCMO app to report the issue digitally (Insert link or QR code to myKCMO app)
· Don’t Remove: DO NOT attempt to clear the inlet yourself! Stormwater inlet grates and manhole covers are heavy, and sharp debris can be hidden beneath leaves.
