Power Failure at KC Water Pump Station Causes Wastewater Overflow

Posted on March 10, 2023

A power failure in the West Bottoms area caused a service disruption to the Westside Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Santa Fe Pump Station located near 1200 Woodswether Road. Evergy reported a power failure at 2:30 a.m. Friday, March 10, 2023. The cause of the outage reportedly stems from an underground power line at or near Broadway Ave. in the bridge construction zone.

Evergy restored power at 10:30 a.m. the same day but the loss of power to the pumps resulted in an undetermined number of gallons of partially untreated wastewater to enter into the Missouri River. The event has been reported to the Missouri Dept. of Natural Resources.

KC Water restarted operations and will continue to manage the facility to produce the quality treated water discharges normally produced.
