Kansas City to Celebrate National Drinking Water Week

Posted on May 3, 2013

(Kansas City, MO.) – Kansas City Water Services will celebrate the essential role drinking water plays in one’s daily life by educating Kansas Citians about the importance and quality of Kansas City’s tap water during National Drinking Water Week, which is May 5-11. During the week, Water Services will host educational activities exploring the journey Kansas City’s water makes from the Missouri River, to the high-quality tap water which is delivered to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses each day.

“Quality drinking water is essential to the health and well-being of Kansas City and the region,” said Water Services Director Terry Leeds. “The work our employees do each day ensures that the water delivered to our customers is of the best possible quality. We’re committed to providing the best drinking water in the nation, now, and for generations to come.”

While many individuals might take for granted the almost 2,800 miles of pipeline that delivers safe and reliable drinking water, this is an intricate system that Water Services has over 125 years of experience operating. Water Services proudly serves more than 460,000 Kansas City residents and 33 wholesale customers in the greater Kansas City area. In 2012, Water Services treated an average of 112 million gallons of drinking water per day. In addition, Water Services collects and tests more than 1,700 water samples from the source, treatment plant, and distribution system each month, an average of 60 samples per day. Each day drinking water is tested for over 280 contaminants, more than three times the number required for testing by the Environmental Protection Agency.
